childhood obesity

Let’s Overcome Obesity Together!

The cornerstone in the management of an overweight child is a lifestyle change that includes restriction of calories and increasing physical activity.  It sounds so simple, right?  Then why has the rate of obesity among children and adolescents tripled over the past three decades?  Currently, a third of New York’s children are overweight or obese.   These are the facts, now what can help?

Here are some practical goals to work with:

  1. Maintain a food diary.  I know, you have heard this before!  The reason why you have heard it before is because it works!!  This will help you self-monitor what you are eating and how much. Commit to it for 21 days.  It takes 21 days to break a habit.  When you see what you are eating, you take responsibility.
  2. Don’t buy foods that you know are trigger foods.  Come on…haven’t we ALL said to ourselves, “I will buy this bag of chips, ice cream, mac, and cheese etc. and I won’t eat all of it at one sitting.”  And, haven’t we ALL eaten it in one sitting?  Live Light Live Right is about moderation, not deprivation.  However, if something is a trigger food, it might be best to hold off on buying it until you are at a healthier weight.
  3. Slow it down!  How could you stomach possibly know you are full if you don’t give it time to register that it is full!  Slow it down and your body will love you for it!
  4. Reward yourself!  Met a goal?  Do something for yourself!  It doesn’t have to cost anything!  Go shopping in your closet.  We all have clothes that we wished we fit into.  You never know what has come back into fashion while you are getting yourself healthy!  Go for a bike ride, because you feel like you can do it now!  Give your kids a special treat…time with you!!  No phones, no TV…just you and them!
  5. Learn about nutrition.   Have a question regarding what is healthy, what isn’t?  Email the Live Light Live Right Program and we will help you!  Come to your medical visit with questions for our amazing nutritionists!  Want to know the answer now?  Google it!!  We have the world at our fingertips with our computer.
  6. Get moving!  The Live Light Live Right program offers FREE exercise for your kids.  Make sure they come!  Come with them!  Join in!  Make being healthy a family vision.  Come to as many classes as you would like.  If you can’t make it for an exercise session….take a walk with your family!  Just move!
  7. Live Light Live Right wants to help!   Research has shown that being a part of a social group makes weight management and a healthy lifestyle significantly more sustainable.  The Live Light Live Right program has been around for 14 years and we hope to be around for many more!  We have an incredibly supportive environment not only with the Live Light Live Right staff but with each of you!  Life-long friends have been made within the children and the parents.  Come to the next exercise class, the next workshop, the next health fair!  We will always be there to welcome you with a big smile and open arms!

Now let’s get healthy together!

It’s New Year’s resolution time again and you’ve been thinking about helping your child get healthy. This is the year you’re going to do it. That’s great! You’re on the right track. But…as any gym owner will tell you, though the treadmills might be full of determined exercisers every January, come March or April, the gym’s back to normal again. So why are New Year’s resolutions so hard to keep?

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Amanda di Bartolomeo, there’s good reason people lose patience when trying to make changes: “Changing behavior can be hard because it takes time. When you think of how long it took to develop the habits you have now – most of them have been developed over a lifetime – it makes sense that changing these behaviors would take time and effort.” But don’t despair. When you start thinking of achieving your goals as a long game, momentum can be your ally.  “Starting with very small changes is more likely to lead to success and the feeling of success motivates maintaining new behaviors.”

Live Light Live Right Warrior Basketball Team Visits The Nets

Live Light Live Right Warrior Basketball Team traveled to the Barley’s Center to see The Nets crush the Denver Nuggets 116-111!  With Coach Martin leading the way via subway, the kids and some of their parents cozied up in their seats to watch the exciting teams duke it out on the court.  “What an amazing night we had!  All of the training our team has done over the last couple months came to life seeing these professional athletes doing the same drills and lay-ups we do during our practices. “The kids had a great time and it was great seeing them enjoy themselves,” said Coach Martin.  As the night began to wind down, the kids were given Nets t-shirts, towels and bobble head player dolls by The Nets Organization!   Everyone enjoyed being a part of a great night!  “I would most definitely recommend the Live Light Live Right Program to any parent whose child is struggling with their weight.  Especially to join the Warrior Basketball team!” said Kamilla, mother of Christian, age 10.

Live Light Live Right Thanks, The Nets Organization for their generous donation.

Bariatric Surgery in Adolescents: What you want to know.

Adolescents have unique physical and psychosocial issues related to obesity and require special care. It is often difficult for these adolescents to manage their nutritional needs, exercise, school and their mental health. Recently there have more opportunities for adolescents with severe obesity (over 300lbs) that meet specific criteria, and continuously struggle with their weight to have special weight loss surgery( Read the latest review).

The first approach is the holistic method, which is what we are LLLR strive to give our youth, but if we find they are really struggling and are committed to their weight loss, we are evaluating them to see if weight loss surgery is a safe option for them. It is not a quick fix but if adequately prepared with family support the adolescent can lose a significant amount of weight over a period of one to two years with improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes.

Our LLLR team can evaluate, prepare and refer adolescents with severe obesity that may require weight loss surgery. Columbia Presbyterian and Brookdale offer informational sessions that can be arranged for adolescents meeting the criteria and the surgery is covered by insurance. Live Light Live Right will be offering group sessions with peer support from patients that have had the surgery with great success.

These adolescents can share their experience of what to expert during the total process. If you would like to find out more please contact Dr. Dhuper’s office at 718-240-5857 to set up an appointment for further evaluation.
