Deadly like Head Trauma the N. F. L.’s other new Scourge is Obesity.

While we all enjoyed Super Bowl and look forward to it every year, Live Light Live Right is concerned about some recent scientific finding affecting these competitive athletes. This article in the New York Times highlights the major risk that former NFL lineman who have bulked up in order to be competitive Quarterbacks, now face related to obesity.

The consequences can be dire. A study published in The American Journal of Medicine found that for every 10 pounds football players gained from high school to college, or from college to the professional level, the risk of heart disease rose 14 percent compared with players whose weight changed little during the same period.

They are also at risk for Sleep Apnea, Diabetes, chronic pain, and injuries. It is very hard for these once strong men to face these disabilities and to lose enough weight to improve their health. The body fights back and holds on to the fat stores

We at Live Light Live Right understand that Obesity is a chronic debilitating disease and evaluate athletes and youth at risk for obesity or who are already obese. Our 4 part model offers them a comprehensive medical evaluation including cardiac evaluation with an exercise stress test if necessary, work up for risk factors which are present as early as 10 years of age and a lifestyle program including nutritional guidance and a supervised exercise program.

We emphasize fitness as a goal and avoidance of weight gain as once obesity sets in the complications continue to progress and are difficult to reverse.

For more information or for an obesity evaluation please contact Dr. Dhuper’s office or the Live Light Live Right program at 718-221-1598.

LLLR Endorses The 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines

The Scientific Report demonstrates that, across the full age spectrum, regular physical activity provides a variety of benefits that help us feel better, sleep better, and perform daily tasks more easily. The report also demonstrates that some benefits happen immediately. A single bout of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity can improve that night’s sleep, reduce anxiety symptoms, improve cognition, reduce blood pressure, and improve insulin sensitivity on the day that it is performed. Most of these improvements become even larger with the regular performance of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The newly documented health benefits also include reduced risk of excessive weight gain in adults, children, and pregnant women; improved cognitive function and a reduced risk of dementia; and reduced risk of cancer of the bladder, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, lung, and stomach. The report demonstrates, for the first time, physical activity-related health benefits for children ages 3 to 5 years. In addition, for the large number of adults who already have a chronic disease or condition such as osteoarthritis, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes, a reduced risk of developing a new chronic condition and reduced risk of progression of the condition they already have, plus improvements in quality of life and physical function

PUBLIC HEALTH IMPACT
The public health impact of insufficient physical activity and the potential gains from even small population-wide increases are substantial. The information contained in this report indicates that, in addition to a reduced risk of death, greater amounts of regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity reduce the risk of many of the most common and expensive diseases or conditions in the United States. Heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, postpartum depression, excessive weight gain, falls with injuries among the elderly, and breast, colon, endometrial, esophageal, kidney, stomach, and lung cancer are all less common among individuals who are or become more physically active. In addition, this report provides evidence that for some of these conditions, individuals who are or become more physically active, relative to their peers with the same condition, have a reduced risk of mortality, reduced risk of developing other chronic diseases or conditions, and reduced risk of progression of the disease they already have. They also have improved physical function and better quality of life.

Each of these conditions alone adds substantially to annual direct and indirect medical costs in the United States. Even small increases in regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, especially if made by the least physically active individuals, would appreciably reduce the nation’s direct and indirect medical costs. Quantification of the costs attributable to insufficient physical activity was beyond the scope of this Committee. It is clear, however, that the cost reductions would be large by any standards. More difficult to quantify, but equally as important, are the benefits associated with how individuals feel every day and the energy and vitality they have to carry out their daily lives. Placing dollar estimates on improved cognition across the full life span, better quality of life, fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, enhanced quality of sleep, and improved physical function is difficult. In addition, monetizing these benefits likely cannot adequately describe the intangible societal benefits that derive from a happier and more energetic population.

Let’s Overcome Obesity Together!

The cornerstone in the management of an overweight child is a lifestyle change that includes restriction of calories and increasing physical activity.  It sounds so simple, right?  Then why has the rate of obesity among children and adolescents tripled over the past three decades?  Currently, a third of New York’s children are overweight or obese.   These are the facts, now what can help?

Here are some practical goals to work with:

  1. Maintain a food diary.  I know, you have heard this before!  The reason why you have heard it before is because it works!!  This will help you self-monitor what you are eating and how much. Commit to it for 21 days.  It takes 21 days to break a habit.  When you see what you are eating, you take responsibility.
  2. Don’t buy foods that you know are trigger foods.  Come on…haven’t we ALL said to ourselves, “I will buy this bag of chips, ice cream, mac, and cheese etc. and I won’t eat all of it at one sitting.”  And, haven’t we ALL eaten it in one sitting?  Live Light Live Right is about moderation, not deprivation.  However, if something is a trigger food, it might be best to hold off on buying it until you are at a healthier weight.
  3. Slow it down!  How could you stomach possibly know you are full if you don’t give it time to register that it is full!  Slow it down and your body will love you for it!
  4. Reward yourself!  Met a goal?  Do something for yourself!  It doesn’t have to cost anything!  Go shopping in your closet.  We all have clothes that we wished we fit into.  You never know what has come back into fashion while you are getting yourself healthy!  Go for a bike ride, because you feel like you can do it now!  Give your kids a special treat…time with you!!  No phones, no TV…just you and them!
  5. Learn about nutrition.   Have a question regarding what is healthy, what isn’t?  Email the Live Light Live Right Program and we will help you!  Come to your medical visit with questions for our amazing nutritionists!  Want to know the answer now?  Google it!!  We have the world at our fingertips with our computer.
  6. Get moving!  The Live Light Live Right program offers FREE exercise for your kids.  Make sure they come!  Come with them!  Join in!  Make being healthy a family vision.  Come to as many classes as you would like.  If you can’t make it for an exercise session….take a walk with your family!  Just move!
  7. Live Light Live Right wants to help!   Research has shown that being a part of a social group makes weight management and a healthy lifestyle significantly more sustainable.  The Live Light Live Right program has been around for 14 years and we hope to be around for many more!  We have an incredibly supportive environment not only with the Live Light Live Right staff but with each of you!  Life-long friends have been made within the children and the parents.  Come to the next exercise class, the next workshop, the next health fair!  We will always be there to welcome you with a big smile and open arms!

Now let’s get healthy together!
