BRC Back to School – Back Pack Drive

DSC_0363

On Saturday, August 15, 2015 The Brownsville Recreation Center had their annual Back to School-Back Pack Drive. This was a fun and exciting event with activities that included, a fitness station, game station,  hula hoop station, DJ, a dance contest with refreshments for all to enjoy. In keeping in line with the mission of fitness, over 5000 pencils were spread out across the entire field and once the children received their back packs, they were allowed to race across the field and pick up as many pencils as they possibly could and place them inside of their brand new colorful back packs. The Live Light Live Right program was able to sponsor this event and every child in attendance received a back pack with school supplies, such as note books, folders, pencils, pens, markers, erasers, pencil sharpeners and reading books for school.

We are proud partners with the Brownsville Recreation Center and all the work that they do to help the children and their families of the Brownsville community.

Live Light Live Right partners with Crunch Fitness for our Summer Fitness Challenge

Live Light Live Right has partnered with Crunch Fitness, the Crown Heights location in Brooklyn, for our Summer Fitness Challenge. Crunch Fitness has incorporated their “Sweat School” into the exercise portion of our fitness program. The Sweat School is a one–hour class taught by a Crunch Fitness personal trainer that includes; circuit training, pound, obstacles course, running and lots of fun fitness activities. Our LLLR children are participating in this program twice a week, in addition to working with our trainer, Ebony, in the park playing basketball and running. The children are enjoying the program at Crunch Fitness and are looking forward to it every week. Live Light Live Right hopes to continue our relationship with Crunch Fitness and create a long-term program with them to work together to fight childhood obesity.

BROOKLYN, NY (April 15, 2015) — Childhood obesity has steadily increased over the years, becoming a major health crisis that has more than doubled in children since the 1970s. Children living in NYC’s most vulnerable communities face obstacles that hinder healthy and active lifestyles. High crime rates, shortages of open spaces, scaled back physical education programs in public schools, and an increased focus on standardized testing contribute to childhood obesity.

Live Light Live Right Holiday Party

IMG_3208

Live Light Live Right was able to give the best holiday party On December 12, 2014 to our participants thanks to the generosity of Teresa Tsai, President and Chief Executive Officer at Interventure and Robin Hood Foundation.

Our party was held at our CAMBA Beacon 166 program location. The Live Light Live Right trainers worked tirelessly with our participants to choreograph several dances for the children to perform for all of our guests. Our own Chef Nico catered the food, which was both delicious and nutritious.

Santa made a visit and surprised many of our children with presents from their wish list. We were grateful many of our partners were there to help us celebrate with our children and their families. It was a great event.

It’s hard to believe that summer is finally here. We are starting the 2015 Kids Ride Club and are looking for kids to join us.

In 2014 we started our Kids Ride Club with our partners Bike NY and it was a huge success. Our process is to teach children and their families to ride safely, have fun and get great exercise. The rides are mapped out in a way the the children are able to explore our great city and have new adventures.

Youth from the Live Light Live Right program participated in a Knockout Obesity demonstration at Brownsville Recreation Center. Now, the two non-profits have set in motion a year-long health initiative to start March 3, 2015.

On February 24th, 2015 we will start our new spring 2015 boxing program with Knockout Obesity. It will be held at our partner location, CAMBA Beacon166. We are excited for this new venture. The program will be twice a week for one-hour. The model is 50 minutes of exercise and 10 minutes of nutrition counseling.

The “KO Program” was established in 2013 by Dimitri Verteouris, Founder and Executive Director, and is dedicated to helping children develop physical fitness and nutrition habits that will promote healthy lifestyles and prevent obesity. The synergy between are programs makes for a wonderful partnership. We look forward to “knocking out” obesity with them.
